Short answer
Breguet has no model called the 2000. The brand numbers its watches by reference, such as 3800, 3810, 3820 and 5827. Sellers who write "Breguet 2000 chronograph" mean a Breguet chronograph made near the year 2000. In most cases that means a Type XX or a Marine chronograph. A fake Breguet 2000 chronograph is a copy of one of those watches.
Copy prices run from about USD 100 to 400. Used genuine Type XX chronographs sell for about USD 4,500 to 9,000. Prices move with reference, box, papers and service records.
What the Breguet chronograph line is
Abraham-Louis Breguet founded the firm in Paris in 1775. Breguet is part of the Swatch Group. The Type XX line grew out of French military contracts from the 1950s, when the armed forces asked for a flyback chronograph for pilots. The civilian Type XX ref. 3800 came in 1995. The larger Type XXI ref. 3810 came in 2004. Breguet also built Marine chronographs, ref. 3460 early on and ref. 5827 later, with guilloche dials.
Where copies fail
- Movement. Genuine Type XX watches use a Lemania base calibre, finished and signed by Breguet. Copies use a Seagull ST19, an Asian 7750, or a quartz module. Ask for a movement photo with the balance and rotor engraving visible.
- Case size. Measure with calipers at the bezel, the case middle and the lug tips. Copies run 0.5 mm to 2 mm off the stated size. Thickness is often the largest gap. A ref. 3800 is about 39 mm. A ref. 3810 is about 42 mm.
- Pushers and crown. Type XX pushers and crowns screw down. Copies skip the threads or leave the crown stiff.
- Dial. Marine chronographs use engine-turned guilloche. Copies stamp the pattern or print flat ink.
- Hands. Breguet hands carry a hollow eccentric tip. Copies use solid hands or paint the tip.
- Caseback. The reference and serial sit between the lugs on genuine watches. Copies etch them shallow.
- Crystal. Genuine watches use sapphire with anti-reflective coating on the outer face.
Numbers to check
Ask for four photos: the dial, the caseback, the movement, and the watch on a scale. Write down the reference from the caseback. Compare it against the Breguet archive or an auction record. A ref. 3800 and a ref. 3810 do not share parts. If the listed size and the reference do not match, stop.
Price signals
A genuine Breguet chronograph does not sell for a few hundred dollars. Steel Type XX prices on the used market start near USD 4,500 and climb with box, papers and service history. Gold Marine chronographs sit higher. A listing at USD 250 with a full set is a copy. Photos lifted from a dealer site are a second signal.
Buying checks
- Get the caseback reference and serial in writing.
- Request a macro photo of the balance and rotor engraving.
- Request a video of the chronograph start, stop and reset.
- Ask if the flyback function works on a single push.
- Have a watchmaker open the caseback before payment clears.
What the term does not cover
Breguet catalogs list no reference 2000. Auction records list no reference 2000. If a seller calls a watch a "Breguet 2000" and shows no caseback number, treat the listing as unknown. Ask for the reference, then check it against a published record.
