Short answer
A fake Cartier Santos two-tone is a counterfeit watch that copies the steel-and-gold Santos de Cartier. Cartier does not make it. The tells sit in six places: gold content, hallmarks, bezel screws, dial printing, movement, and serial numbers. A genuine two-tone Santos has an 18k yellow gold bezel. Most fakes use gold plating or a gold-colored alloy.
What the two-tone Santos is
Cartier released the Santos in steel and gold in 1978. The current Santos de Cartier comes in two sizes: medium at 35.1 mm and large at 39.8 mm. The two-tone version pairs a steel case and bracelet with an 18k yellow gold bezel and a gold crown. The bezel carries eight visible screws. The movement is the in-house caliber 1847 MC, an automatic. Retail for the two-tone large is above $10,000.
Checkpoints on a suspected fake
- Gold: real 18k gold carries a hallmark. Look for "750" or "18K" plus a French or Swiss assay mark on the caseback or the bezel edge. Plating has no hallmark.
- Screws: the eight bezel screw heads should sit flush and align with the case line. Copies show uneven slots and heads that stand proud.
- Dial: Roman numerals on a genuine dial are sharp and evenly spaced. The "CARTIER" lettering holds a consistent stroke weight. Many copies show thick or uneven print.
- Hidden signature: several Santos dials carry a small "Cartier" inside the VII numeral. Copies omit it or place it off center.
- Crown: the crown cabochon is a blue sapphire or spinel on genuine pieces. Copies use glass or plastic.
- Caseback: the reference and serial numbers must match the paperwork and the lugs. Replicas often repeat one generic number across a production run.
- Movement: caliber 1847 MC has Cartier engraving on the rotor. Copies use unbranded or Miyota movements.
- Weight: 18k gold is dense. A two-tone Santos feels heavier in the hand than a plated copy of the same size.
Price gap
Counterfeit Santos two-tone watches sell for about $200 to $1,500 depending on the grade of the copy. A genuine two-tone large lists above $10,000. That gap is the first signal. No seller can deliver 18k gold and an in-house automatic at copy prices.
Legal status in the US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for an individual. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches at the border. Personal import of a counterfeit item is not allowed, even for one watch. Cartier does not service or authenticate counterfeits, and a copy carries no warranty.
What a photo cannot show
Photos hide weight, movement finish, and hallmark depth. A listing with only studio images and no caseback shot gives no useful data. Cartier boutiques and authorized dealers can verify a serial number. An independent watchmaker can open the case and check the movement directly.
